MONARCH BUTTERFLY: Allegorical Sculpture at the Museo del Niño of Carolina

Viva Carolina La Revista | November-December 2011

By: Delis Benítez Joubert

"[...] all the families who come to this place can enjoy a breathtaking sculptural piece created exclusively for this place; the piece is placed just in the main entrance of the Museum. It is titled "METAMORFOSIS" (METAMORPHOSIS)."

"As explained by the artist José García Campos, 16 feet wide x 13 feet height x 5 feet deep piece, made from stainless steel and acrylic paint, was inspired by the insect because of its strenght and determination."

"The strength and determination of this insect, fragile and vulnerable, can be compared to the child's. Like the butterfly, the development of the young man will be full of difficulties and obstacles, but with perseverance and by inculcating good values, they can succeed in life," said the sculptor.

"So, when visiting the Museo del Niño of Carolina, you can observe the METAMORPHOSIS of your little ones through the imposing image of the monarch butterfly sculpture."

JOSE GARCIA CAMPOS IN CARAS MAGAZINE

100X35 Art | May 2011

"Professional sculptor for 15 years. Stainless steel, bronze, aluminum, copper, stone, and wood are among the materials he uses it. His public artworks are exhibited in San Juan, Barceloneta, Dorado, and Caguas. Now, he is in the midst creating of a sculpture for the Museo del Niño of Carolina".

"Since childhood I have been interested in the art, and my parents encouraged me and supported me to develop as an artist. I took classes at the Liga de Arte and then studied at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas, where I graduated with a major in sculpture".

"My artistic expression says I love the Creation and that I have a positive view of life, as some titles from my exhibitions show this: "Fértil" (Fertile), "Semillas de Vida" (Seeds of Life), "Jardín de Sueños" (Garden of Dreams) and "Intimo" (Intimate)".

"Art has impacted people positively and negatively, it is just a means of expression. Throughout time, it has reflected historical moments including, political, religious, philosophical influences, and even moral values. It has led thousands to faith in something or someone, and others, to renounce and hate. It has united people and ways of thinking, and it has also divided unthinkable things. If the impact of art is for the good or the bad, it can only be fully understood over time".

CAPTIVE SCULPTURES

Primera Hora | April 12, 2007

By: Carmen M. Trelles Hernández

[...] Graduated from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas, José García Campos believes that scuplture provides a way to capture his mood and presents a vision of the organic world around him. Trees, leaves, petals, and flowers, are often part of the visual language of this artist, whether in his public artworks or smaller sculptures. His desires are to unite nature with his feelings while exploring with different and impressive shapes.

[...] García Campos, who has had the opportunity to work with artists such as Pablo Rubio and Arnaldo Roche, create intuitively. "No matter the media you use, the important thing is the result you get. So, I start by defining what I want to do and when I have the image, choose the material, because each one has their richness and limitations", explains.

[...] Another important aspect of the artwork of this young sculptor, who describes himself as "very demanding", faithfully believes in communicating with other artists.

Among the fluid shapes of the Garcia Campos' artworks of wood, steel, and stone, the viewer can get lost on a visual journey that suggests a changing world. The artist Charles Juhasz Alvarado reviewed this experience in the brochure of this exhibition explaining that the nine artworks "exalt the beauty of creation and iluminate the vulnerability of transformation and changing moments".
